Soho's Tube-Themed Bar Launches A Tipsy Afternoon Tea

Love finding awesome food in London? Join our Facebook group Londonist Foodie Finds.

What ho! Much-loved tube-themed bar Cahoots has launched spiffing a new afternoon tea.

Cahoots Ticket Hall — which opened in November 2019 as a sister venue to the original — has announced Tea for Scoundrels, a traditional British afternoon tea with a boozy twist. The menu is full of sweet and savoury food, plus plenty of cocktails disguised as cuppas to wash it down.

In true Cahoots style, there’s a back story to the menu. The Scoundrels who run the place have, against the rules of rationing, come by a haul of tea crates, filled with a selection of cakes and cocktails. Choose your crate, from a choice of three, based on the cocktails within (an alcohol-free version is available, as are gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options).

You’re then presented with your crate, a key, and a telegram, and left to your own devices to crack codes and decipher clues in order to get at the salt beef, smoked salmon and cucumber sarnies, cocktails, and petit fours which lie within. If you get frustrated at any time, just let the thought of the final compartment keep you going — it’s filled with ingredients for you to create your own cocktail.

Ticket Hall is located opposite Cahoots in Kingly Court, Carnaby. The decor echoes that of a post-war train station-turned-cocktail bar, featuring wartime and train station memorabilia, and complete with Lost Property section and Tobacconist & Grocery Store. Sounds absolutely top-notch to us.

Tea For Scoundrels at Cahoots Ticket Hall, 13 Kingly Court, available Fridays and Sunday. It’s currently in a soft launch period, and officially launches on 6 March 2020. From £44 per person, including three cocktails, booking required. The Squiffy Picnic experience is still available at Cahoots Underground.

Mr Ji Brings Spicy Taiwanese Fried Chicken To Soho

Love food? Join our Facebook Group, Foodie Finds, to discuss all things edible in London.

Mention fried chicken to most people and their thoughts immediately go to the Southern US, primarily the state of Kentucky (the debate as to whether that counts as a Southern state is one for another day). It’s proof that the marketing folk at KFC are doing a good job.

But how about Taiwanese Fried Chicken — ring any bells? Not for me either, so the prospect of sampling some ‘TFC’ at Mr Ji in Soho has me intrigued.

It’s set up very much like a typical fried chicken restaurant with bright lights, and wooden stools and chairs that are designed for a quick bite — spend more than half an hour here and you’ll get a very numb backside.

It’s clear from the outset this is very different from the typical greasy chicken most of us are guilty of scoffing on the way home after a night out. The popcorn chicken and the half chicken breast are a lot drier and spicier than you might expect of fried chicken, and you’d do well to get some sauce to go with it.

The choice of five different coatings does give the place return value. We try the original spiced and the garlic and coatings — there are subtle differences in the flavours and I’m keen to come back and try the Korean barbecue and other powders.

While the popcorn chicken and breast are solid options, it’s the bao that are the real stars of the show. Both sweet chilli and garlic and coriander are saucy delights that counter the dry nature of the chicken perfectly.

While I haven’t been fully converted by Mr Ji, it’s a place I would revisit, and all fried chicken fans should sample Taiwanese Fried Chicken at least once — it’s a unique take on a familiar fast food.

Mr Ji, 72 Old Compton Street, Soho.

Christmas break at 24oranges HQ

We’ve been busy this year to the point of having a tough time posting this fall, but we should be back on top of things for 2020. It is Christmas day as I write this, and the plan is to eat Italian food, drink, listen to Christmas music and play with the little houses above, courtesy of a supermarket chain that has been handing them out.

Although many people complained about the plastic, after work on December 24 I was handed an entire box of these houses (the special offer was over) and could not resist taking as many home as I could. I decided to make a traditional Dutch winter scene for you, complete with an ‘oliebollen’ stand, a food usually eaten on New Year’s Eve, and ‘koek en zopie’, cake and a hot beverage with alcohol usually enjoyed after ice skating. It’s not winter at all here in Amsterdam, it’s 9 degrees!

As always, co-blogger Branko is working on his list of favourite stories of 2019, which should be online before the year is out.

Thanks to everyone for reading us and sharing the weird and fun news of 24oranges, and Happy Holidays!
