Be More Chill Is A Quirky Take On The High School Musical Genre

Photo: Matthew Crockett

What do you do when you're a gawky young teenager trying to fit in? If you get the chance to take a pill that will make you more popular, why wouldn't you? And so begins a sci-fi take on trying to fit in at high school, where it's hard to be yourself when the voices inside your head are telling you how to fit in with the cool kids.

Photo: Matthew Crockett

With an enthusiastic cast, infectious music and a quirky take on the high school musical genre, Be More Chill is a lot of fun, even if you're not a devotee of the original book or part of the show’s social media phenomena. The book was by Ned Vizzini, and drew on his experiences at high school. Vizzini struggled with anxiety and depression throughout his life, and it led to his death by suicide in 2013.

Photo: Matthew Crockett

The story translates remarkably well to stage, capturing in song the doubts and struggles of the characters with everyday pressures at school. There are also some astute reflections on the limits of technology, particularly in allowing young people to have control over how they can grow and learn.

The music and lyrics by Joe Iconis seem to grow from the text in quirks and blips. Not every song is hummable, and some lyrics might seem a little odd, but in the context of the show, it all makes perfect sense.

Photo: Matthew Crockett

Heading up the enthusiastic cast is Scott Folan as the gawky Jeremy, and Miracle Chance as the quirky Christine. Alex Basco Koch's video projections effectively give you the sense you're trapped with Jeremy in a game that you can't get out.

Photo: Matthew Crockett

A modern update of the high school musical. Well almost modern, since scenes are set in now-bankrupt stores such as Payless Shoes, and the soon-to-be-gone Forever 21.

Be More Chill, The Other Palace, Palace Street, SW1E 5JA. Tickets £19.50-£87.50, until 3 May 2020.

Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt Is A Moving Exploration Of Memory And Family

Photo: Marc Brenner

Tom Stoppard’s new drama, Leopoldstadt, is a deep dive into the heart of a family album: this album is one with more than the usual family drama, though, as we follow the lives of the Jacobowitz and Merz family over three generations, delving into their history while witnessing Jewish celebrations, the first world war, harsh antisemitism and, finally, the Holocaust.

Photo: Marc Brenner

Beginning in the imperial grandeur of Vienna, Leopoldstadt takes us on a two-hour journey from pre-first world war to the post-war misery of the 1950s. Rumoured to be his last play, Leopoldstadt is inspired by Stoppard’s own family tree and the recent revelations of his Jewish origin. Along with dates projected onto the stage, signalling where we are in history, original photographs of Stoppard’s family are displayed, as well as a hand-drawn family tree.

Photo: Marc Brenner

The family tree is definitely necessary — the two families are so large, that even the characters themselves forget how they are related to one another. Out of this 40 strong cast, however, only a handful of the characters are properly developed and focused on. Hermann (Adrian Scarborough) and his ‘Christian’ wife Gretl (Faye Castelow) particularly stand out: their gradual decline throughout the two-hour play is a sad, but necessary, thing to watch.

Photo: Marc Brenner

The drama almost entirely plays out within the four walls of the grand Viennese living room, but sounds of smashing glass, fighting, and bombs from outside suggest that things are getting dangerous. Even amid the increasingly tense developments outside of the house, there are moments of comedy. These, however, get fewer and further between following the 1938 Anschluss: the whole family have to move into a single room, and the extent of what their Jewish identity means for their fate comes to light. Historically, Leopoldstadt is spot on. Facts and figures are peppered into the play, so by the end, the audience has not only received a lesson in Jewish traditions (such as the significance of food items at the Passover feast) but also learnt the finer details of the Austrian experience of the second world war.

Photo: Marc Brenner

The large cast is a visual reminder of the sheer number of Jews that were the victims of the Holocaust: in the final scene, in 1955, there are only three family members left. One of the survivors, Rosa (Jenna Augen), reels off the locations of the others’ deaths: Auschwitz, Dachau, Auschwitz, Auschwitz…

A fantastically executed, moving play about identity, family and memory, Leopoldstadt reminds us why there are some things that should simply never be forgotten.

Leopoldstadt, Wyndham’s Theatre, Charing Cross Road, WC2H 0DA. Tickets from £15, until 13 June 2020.

The Visit At National Theatre: A Drawn-Out Acting Masterclass From Lesley Manville

Photo: Johan Persson

Claire Zachanassian (Lesley Manville) returns to her destitute hometown seeking revenge on former lover Alfred (Hugo Weaving). Now the world’s richest woman, the locals sense a potential change in their fortunes but learn that prosperity comes with a price.

Photo: Johan Persson

It seems price was of no concern to the National. With a big name writer, two star leads as well as a vast cast, grand revolving sets and even a live band, no expense has been spared. For every impressive set piece, though, there are several filler moments as the band kicks in while we wait for the next scene. Time is the main issue here.

Photo: Johan Persson

At three and a half hours so much focus is on theatrics that momentum dips. The moments of real suspense, though, are done exceedingly well and this is mostly down to the cast as a whole. We believe Weaving’s fear and Sara Kestelman and Nicholas Woodeson offer outstanding support as the School Principal and Mayor.

Photo: Johan Persson

But this is Manville’s show. With biting putdowns reminiscent of Bette Davis, she shifts from outrageous to outright evil before sharing a beautifully tender scene with Alfred in the final act. With Claire having artificial legs, Manville also showcases remarkable physicality, evoking her power through stance, upper body and voice. A mesmerising masterclass in acting.

Photo: Johan Persson

The closing moments are hauntingly powerful but even certain elements of the climax are drawn out. After investing over three hours, this is when the audience are after pace as well as pathos. It’s without question a great play about the power of money and our idea of justice and the performances ultimately overshadow its flaws. But if this grand visual feast was cut down, we’d actually have far more to see.

The Visit, National Theatre, Upper Ground, South Bank, SE1 9PX. Tickets £15-£89, until 13 May 2020.

Beware The Owl, The Aunt And The Hatter: Far Away At Donmar Warehouse

Photo: Johan Persson

Young Joan can't sleep. Was there a bump in the night? Or a scream? She is staying with her Aunt Harper, and she reassures her it's probably an owl. They seem to be in the English countryside. But with her aunt's responses becoming less and less convincing, young Joan knows she has stumbled on something sinister about the world. And not just because aunty isn't a convincing liar or her armchair is filthy. Thus begins the short descent into a dystopia where people are rounded up for inexplicable reasons, and you're never sure who is with you or against you.

Photo: Johan Persson

It's a short descent as Caryl Churchill's piece runs only about 45 minutes. But in that time it's unsettling enough to leave the audience nervously laughing. In the 20 years since its premiere, the fears of all controlling entities have only grown thanks to a vibrant network of social media, pseudo-news organisations and spin. What may have seemed far away then looks a bit prophetic now.

Photo: Johan Persson

Comedy comes courtesy of a scene with grown-up Joan (Aisling Loftus) and Todd (Simon Manyonda) making hats for an event. As the days go by, marked by a blackout, they grow increasingly outlandish, until what they will be used for is revealed.

It's evocative with staging by designer Lizzie Clachan. There's a block glistening on stage. Is it the reflections of the night, the back of a lorry or prison wall? Christopher Shutt's sound design underscores the tension of the piece.

A brief encounter about fear and paranoia. It's almost over as quickly as it started. But it makes its mark.

Far Away, Donmar Warehouse, Earlham St, WC2H 9LX. Tickets £10-£40, until 4 April 2020.
