Plant Tips: Getting ready for winter

For us plant lovers the change of seasons comes always with some additional to-dos. While our plants transition from their growing period into a more dormant state, we also have to take care of their locations and adapt to the changing environment. The light situation changes in wintertime and we tend to switch on the heating in our homes. Time to move the plants away from heaters and, where possible, closer to windows as natural light sources. With bigger and more mature plants this can become a gym task – or you have smart plant rollers to help you move your plants around the apartment without any heavy lifting. But let’s take it from the top.

Here are some simple yet handy tips to prepare your plants for the upcoming winter season:

Reduce watering and stop using fertilizers:

As plants slowly transition into dormancy, we should reduce our regular watering and stop the use of any fertilizer. Adapt the watering to the plant type and temperature in the room.

Find a cooler spot for your plants:

Move your plants away from heaters that will be switched on during the colder season. If possible at all, move your plants to a cooler room in general as this will help them transition into dormancy.

Mist your plants:

If your plants remain in heated rooms, help them fight the dry air by misting them every now and then. Especially if you have tropical foliage this will be crucial to avoid brown and crispy leaf edges.

Move your plants towards the light:

During winter time, the light situation changes completely in our homes. Even on sunny days, the light is more ‘flat’ coming from a different angle and it might not reach all the corners as it does in summer. Try to move your plants closer to windows or balcony doors to help them get more natural light.

Use plant rollers/caddies for big/heavy plants:

Big mature plants grow in big and heavy pots. Now moving these can be a difficult task and sometimes requires another person. To avoid heavy lifting and the potential of any injury or damage, help yourself with practical plant rollers or plant caddies. They come in various designs and can be also pretty ‘invisible’ if you prefer to not display them. I found perfect options at Wagner System, a leading producer of plant rollers. The Ultraflat plant roller is perfect for those who prefer the most subtle and pretty much invisible rolling base (comes in various colors). For those with a more playful design approach, I recommend this petal like plant roller. Moving your plants around the home will be not only easy but fun too!
