AS is often the way, now the holiday season is well and truly over, the UK is in for a final blast of summer heat next week.
The Met Office is forecasting temperatures will rise to as much as 31C in much of the south of the country thanks to a mass of tropical continental air coming up from the south in combination with light winds..
This is way above the average for the time of year, and likely to make this September one of the hottest on record.
It follows what was a somewhat disappointing August on the weather front for the many people who opted for a 'staycation'.
It also comes just as the rule of six law comes into force on Monday under which social gatherings of more than six people, outdoor as well as indoors, are not allowed.
The beach weather is in any case not set to last very long.
Temperatures are expected to fall back down to more normal levels before the weekend.
Back in late June the UK sizzled in temperatures which got as high as the mid-30s.
