ICICI-Videocon case: Chanda Kochhar’s husband Deepak arrested by ED

The Enforcement Directorate has arrested former ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar’s husband Deepak Kochhar in the ICICI Bank-Videocon loan case. He was called in for questioning earlier in the day at the ED office in Delhi.

Sources have told India Today TV that after getting concrete evidence against Deepak Kochhar, the financial probe agency questioned him and when he was unable to explain some transactions, the officials decided to place him under arrest.

It has been alleged that Deepak Kochhar’s firm — NuPower Renewables — received an investment of Rs 64 crore from Videocon Group and Rs 325 crore from Matix Fertilisers in 2010 soon after they were granted loans by the ICICI Bank.

Trouble also seems to be mounting for Chanda Kochhar as the ED is also probing her role in loan sanctions to private firms apart Videocon and Matix Fertilisers while she was chief of the bank. The probe agency suspects that Chanda Kochhar through her husband’s firm was benefitted in exchange for granting loans.

Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had provisionally attached Chanda Kochhar’s assets, including shares and her Mumbai apartment, worth Rs 78 crore.

Chanda Kochhar and eight others from the bank were accused of irregularities in sanctioning loans to now-defunct Videocon Group.
