Real Madrid have been won La Liga for a record 34th time after a 2-1 home win against Villarreal and 7 points clear with a game in hand against pre-Covid leaders Barcelona whose form has not recovered the "new normality" return.

Karim Benzema scored both goals, the second a decisive second-half penalty, which has allowed the Madrid team to regain the crown lost to arch Catalan rivals Barcelona two years ago.

Vicente Iborra scored one for Villareal but the visitors had a last minute gasp of home annuled for handball in extra time.

This was Real´s 10th home victory over Villarreal as their manager Zinedine Zidane led the Galacticos to his second league title as manager having  come back to take over from Julen Lopetegui after their Champions League defeat and competition exit against Ajax in March 2019.

The game was played in a closed door Di Stefano stadium which is part of the club's Valdebebas training complex.

The club´s iconic Santiago Bernabeu stadium is presently being substantially renovated.

The next challenge for the Liga Champions is to overcome their 2-1 deficit against English side Manchester City in the Champions League Last 16 knock out in order to progress to the quarter final Lisbon  tournament which is replacing the traditional tournament
