Wenn Scott nichts tut, beschweren sich alle, er würde sein Leben verschwenden. Wenn er etwas tut, wünschen sich alle, er würde besser wieder nichts tun. Denn was er tut, sind Dinge wie: Neunjährige tätowieren, sehr viel Marihuana rauchen, Schmiere stehen bei einem Raubüberfall auf eine Nachbarschaftsapotheke. Am besten für Scott wäre: sich mit 24 Jahren langsam mal eine Alternative sowohl zum Nichtstun als auch zum Scheißebauen zu überlegen.
Scott ist die Hauptfigur in der Tragikomödie «The King of Staten Island» von und mit Pete Davidson. Im Unterschied zu Scott hat Davidson mit seinen 26 Jahren schon einiges erreicht. In dem Kinofilm spielt er die Hauptrolle, er hat am Drehbuch mitgeschrieben und als Produzent fungiert. Er ist einer der Stars im Ensemble der Sketchshow «Saturday Night Live», die bereits Comedy-Legenden wie Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy und Tina Fey hervorgebracht hat.

Und wer Davidson nicht von daher kennt, hat womöglich auf Promi-Blogs etwas über ihn gelesen. Davidson war Kurzzeitverlobter von Pop-Superstar Ariana Grande und Freund der deutlich älteren Schauspielerin Kate Beckinsale. Erst kürzlich soll er sich von Model Kaia Gerber, der Tochter von Cindy Crawford, getrennt haben.
Schmerzhaftes Gedenken
Trotzdem hat Davidson viel mit dem Abhänger Scott aus «The King of Staten Island» gemeinsam. Denn Davidson ist nicht nur selbst in Staten Island, dem unbekanntesten, am dünnsten besiedelten und unglamourösesten Stadtbezirk von New York City, aufgewachsen. Er hat wie seine Filmfigur sehr jung den Vater verloren: Scott Davidson war einer der Feuerwehrleute, die am 11. September 2001 in den Flammen des World Trade Center ums Leben kamen. Pete Davidson war damals sieben Jahre alt und von dem Verlust so traumatisiert, dass er sich einmal alle Haare vom Kopf riss.
Auch «The King of Staten Island» ist von Trauma und schmerzhaftem Gedenken durchzogen. Das zeigt sich nicht zuletzt daran, dass Davidson seine Figur nach seinem Vater benannt hat. Film-Scott hat seinen Highschoolabschluss vermurkst, jobbt ab und zu als Kellner und wohnt mit 24 Jahren noch bei seiner Mutter, von der er sich wünscht, dass auch sie nie über den Verlust des Vaters hinwegkommt.
Als sie aber genau das tut und sich neu verliebt, weiß Scott, was nun eigentlich ansteht: Er muss erwachsen werden. Doch zunächst wehrt er sich gegen alles, das auch nur entfernt nach Verantwortung aussieht. Selbst beim Schmierestehen für Kumpels, die eine Apotheke überfallen, lässt er sich von einem Handyspiel ablenken und sorgt so dafür, dass sein halber Freundeskreis im Knast landet. Erst ganz auf sich gestellt, beginnt Scott, endlich etwas in seinem Leben zu ändern.
Das Dilemma der Millenials
«Man-Babys», also Männer, die sich mit Händen und Füßen gegen das Erwachsenwerden wehren, gehören schon lange zum Repertoire von US-Komödien, allen voran denen von Produzent, Autor und Regisseur Judd Apatow. Angefangen mit «Jungfrau (40), männlich, sucht …» hat Apatow die Figur des Man-Baby in «Stiefbrüder» 2008 auf die Spitze getrieben: Zwei 40-Jährige benehmen sich wie Zehnjährige, als ihre Eltern beschließen zu heiraten. Denn beide wohnen noch zu Hause und wollen die Aufmerksamkeit ihres jeweiligen Elternteils einfach nicht teilen.
Bei «The King of Staten Island» hat Apatow Regie geführt und am Drehbuch mitgeschrieben. Hier variiert er die Figur des Man-Baby klug. Scott stemmt sich nämlich nicht aus Bequemlichkeit dagegen, auszuziehen und einen Job zu finden, ihm stehen die Traumatisierung durch den Tod des Vaters und eine angedeutete ADHS-Diagnose im Weg. Er würde ja, wenn er nur könnte – was wohl das Dilemma der Millennials schlechthin ist.
Pete Davidson hat in Interviews und in den sozialen Medien offen über seine eigenen psychischen Probleme gesprochen, manchmal in so krassen Worten, dass sich Fans ernsthafte Sorgen um ihn machten. Gleichzeitig hat Davidson diese Verletzlichkeit in seine Comedy einfließen lassen: «Ich mag es, düstere Dinge zu tun, peinliche, seltsame Dinge, die man nicht wirklich haha-lustig findet», hat er mal erklärt.
«The King of Staten Island» kommt diese Durchlässigkeit zur dunklen Seite zugute, überhaupt fühlt sich der Film erfahrungsgesättigter, welthaltiger an als viele andere Komödien. Das liegt auch an seinem Setting in Staten Island, das als herrlich unspektakuläre Kulisse dient.
Von Kameramann und Oscarpreisträger Robert Elswit («There Will Be Blood») in blasses Sommerlicht getaucht, treten die unansehnlichen Ecken der Insel klar hervor, ohne dass viel Aufsehen darum gemacht wird. Wo Menschen wenig Geld haben und viel arbeiten, steht halt auch mal ein Sofa auf einer Wiese herum, auf dem Jugendliche abhängen.
König dieses Stadtteils wird Scott freilich nicht, als er endlich etwas auf die Reihe bekommt. Er wird etwas Besseres: erwachsen.
