Before and After: HGTV’s “Good Bones” Restored This Abandoned Victorian Home—And It’s Completely Unrecognizable

There's nothing like pouring new life into a home that's long overdue for some TLC. In this week's episode of HGTV's "Good Bones," Karen E. Laine and Mina Starsiak set out to makeover a vacant Victorian home with an unfortunate past—and give it the fresh start it deserves.

Located in the Old Southside neighborhood in Indianapolis, this property was a victim of serious fire damage and left in dismay, with every room filled to the brim with old belongings of the former tenants. After purchasing the 2,132-square-foot house, Laine and Starsiak decided to dedicate their efforts to bringing life back into the spaces while restoring some of the charm it once had.

But there was a lot of work to be done. After the mother-daughter duo and their demolition team cleared out all the rooms—saving some valuable items to be repurposed inside the renovated spaces, of course—they set out to create a Modern Victorian theme throughout the house.

They decided to run with a mainly white color palette to brighten up the formerly dark rooms. Flooring that had the look of hardwood but lighter was installed, and walls were painted white with mostly neutral details decorating the spaces. Due to fire rating laws, the team had to remove some of the windows, so can lights were installed to make up for them.

The kitchen (the before image at the top of the story) itself was a massive undertaking. Laine and Starsiak decided to create a "wallsplash"—as Laine and Starsiak called it—with a marble pattern that went all the way up to the ceiling, adding a bold textural element to the room. Plus, it matched with the marble countertops to make the whole kitchen harmonious.

In addition to the modern touches they added, Laine and Starsiak refurbished the house's original fireplace and sliding doors that led into the parlor to highlight some of its historic charm. "We brought in a combination of Victorian-inspired and modern pieces to make the house feel elegant but also fresh and young," Laine said during the episode.

At the end, the renovated home was ready to welcome tenants inside its walls yet again. The only question is, did Laine and Starsiak seal the deal? You'll have to watch the episode to find out.
