It was a weird, vaguely apocalyptic weekend in the Canary Islands. Winds of more than 80 MPH from the Sahara Desert brought sand that settled over the island for days, leaving a troubling red haze. Airports closed, wildfires spread. According to one resident who spoke to the New York Times, the situation created a «weekend from hell.» As a result of the sandstorm, known as a «calima,» the Canary Islands—which belong to Spain, but sit off the western coast of Morocco in the Atlantic Ocean—registered the world’s poorest air quality last weekend, the Times reported. Authorities advised residents to stay indoors with their windows shut. One resident told the Times it’s the strongest calima he could remember. The following photos show the wrath of the calima throughout the islands.
