Ewan McGregor will be donning his Jedi robes once again, as the Scottish Star Wars star revealed the new Obi-Wan Kenobi series is set to begin filming in March of 2021.

The as yet untitled Disney+ Obi-Wan project was first announced back in August 2019 and was meant to be filming this year, but the shoot was delayed when writer Hossein Amini left the project in January.

'It's not all me'

Speaking on The Graham Norton Show on Friday 9 October, McGregor confirmed the filming date and said, "It's the Obi-Wan Kenobi story, I suppose. It's not all me, but it certainly will be a lot of me, which is good. We start shooting it in March next year."

Writer Hossein Amini was eventually replaced by Joby Harold in April, with script rewrites forcing production to be delayed into 2021.

During his Graham Norton Show interview, McGregor expressed his admiration for Alec Guinness, who played Kenobi in the original Star Wars trilogy.

He said, "The fun thing about doing that in the first place when I was much younger was trying to imagine Alec Guinness. How would he play these scenes as a younger guy?

"It led me to watch some of his earlier work, which I had never seen before. Brilliant movies, wonderful films that he'd been in, and I had such a great time studying him in those movies."

What will the series be about?

Little is known about the plot of the upcoming series, but we do know it will take place eight years after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. This means that Obi-Wan will be somewhere between where fans last saw McGregor appearing as the Jedi Master, and the older version of the character first introduced to viewers in Star Wars: A New Hope.

Ewan McGregor played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequel series, first appearing in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, where he was tasked with looking after Anakin Skywalker before his turn to the dark side.

The actor also made voice appearances in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Who is Obi-Wan Kenobi?

Obi-Wan Kenobi has appeared several times throughout the Star Wars saga. The character was first seen in Star Wars: A New Hope where he acted as Luke Skywalker's mentor in the ways of the Jedi. After a message sent by Princess Leia begging Obi-Wan for help, the call would spark Luke's call to adventure and the return of Kenobi to the galactic stage.

In the prequel movies, viewers are introduced to a younger Obi-Wan under the training of Qui-Gon Jinn. Fans learned that he was originally trained by Grand Master Yoda, and would go on to be put in charge of the training of Anakin Skywalker, the Jedi who later becomes Darth Vader.

Kenobi is known to be an outcast, an outlaw, and a powerful general during the Clone Wars, as well as a teacher, a student, a friend, and even a father figure. He played a central role in some of the most important parts of Star Wars, including delivering Luke and Leia Skywalker to their new homes after the death of their mother, Padme.
