More than 100 firefighters raced to a car workshop in Croydon after it caught fire, sending out clouds of thick black smoke last Thursday.

The blaze was on Lancing Road, Croydon, next to the Lombard Roundabout, in Broad Green, on February 27.

People driving through the area, and reaching the roundabout called 999 to report the smell of burning rubber.

15 fire engines, carrying 100 firefighters from surrounding fire stations in Norbury, Croydon, West Norwood, Brixton, Addington surrounded the area to fight the fire from the car store.

Police closed Lancing Road and Canterbury Road at 6.25pm to protect people from the fire, and warned them to avoid the area, as people unaware of closures were causing traffic to build up. A further four roads were closed later.

After the last road closure, firefighters warned residents living near the Lancing Road car workshop to keep their windows and doors closed to be protected from the smoke.
