Teneriffe House by Vokes and Peters

Vokes and Peters reimagine a historic Brisbane building designed by prominent Australian architect AB Wilson.

Unprotected by a heritage listing and under threat of demolition, the clients, in collaboration with Vokes and Peters, saw the immediate potential in this expansive Queensland home. Previously a mental health hostel during the 1900s, the original Brisbane home suffered from a substantial amount of disfiguration and wreckage.

After a complex process involving rehabilitation and extension onto the century-old home, Vokes and Peters have successfully made way for a  family-friendly Queenslander.

Vokes and Peters have added to their suburban Queensland portfolio with Teneriffe House, located two kilometres from Brisbane’s CBD. The interior and surroundings of the house were completely unrecognisable. To revive the home, the drastic renovation pushed the building up the block, with a 90-degree rotation to maximise the abundant north-facing garden.

Occupying the ground floor is the kitchen, opening up onto the garden for outdoor dining and entertaining all year round. It wouldn’t be a traditional Queenslander home without an iconic veranda, accessible from a series of bedrooms and living areas upstairs.

The architectural staircase steals the show in the centre of the home; a subtle design statement, along with the white linear panels that clad the internal walls. Through a consistent colour palette of white, timber and terracotta, the home remains neutral and understated, with a focus on the original architectural significance. A nod to the home’s heritage is also evident in the bathroom, showcasing simple subway tiles and exposed basin plumbing, reminiscent of the early 1900s.

The renewed home by Vokes and Peters rightfully rediscovers the spirit of the old building, realising the client’s vision and breathing new life to its surroundings.
