Pancake Day In London 2020: The Best Shrove Tuesday Menus, Races And Events

Tuck into all-you-can-eat pancakes at Harvey Nichols

Flippin’ heck, it’s that time of year again. Shrove Tuesday falls on 25 February 2020. Here are some of the best Pancake Day events we’ve spotted around London this year.

Pancake day menus and events in London

First things first. Pancakes are for life, not just for Pancake Day, so whether you like yours stacked with fruit or smothered with Nutella, take a look at the best places to eat pancakes in London, all year round. We’ve got vegan and gluten-free pancake fans covered too. Bear in mind that crepe-centric restaurants are likely to be very busy on Pancake Day itself, and may be offering limited or special menus rather than their usual selection.

Free pancakes at The Lamb Tavern, Leadenhall Market

The Lamb Tavern, the pub which organises the Leadenhall Market pancake race (details below), is also giving away 500 free pancakes on the day. You don’t need to take part in the race to claim your free pancake — just drop by the pub after 12.30pm (soonish after 12.30pm, to be in with the best chance of getting one).

Unlimited American pancakes at Harvey Nichols

The Fifth Floor Cafe at Harvey Nichols Knightsbridge serves a special pancake menu between 20-25 February. For £12.50 per person, tuck into unlimited, American-style fluffy pancakes over 1.5 hours, with toppings including honeycomb, mixed fruits, chocolate-coated candied orange slices and roasted pecans, and sauces such as melted chocolate, salted caramel, ginger maple custard, lemon curd and Greek yoghurt. £1 from each bill goes to homelessness charity StreetSmart.

Health-focused restaurant Avobar brings its own twist to Pancake Day, offering a stack of three, thick, American-style pancakes, turned green by matcha. Go sweet with melting avo-butter, sticky caramelised banana and maple syrup, or stick to savoury with house-cured salmon or grilled bacon, with a side of turmeric poached egg and avo-butter.

Pancake Day at Where The Pancakes Are

Where The Pancakes Are is where you want to be on Pancake Day

We included Southwark venue Where The Pancakes Are in our list of the best places to eat pancakes year-round, but it comes into its own on Pancake Day. In past year’s, the revelry has included lemon bobbing and a three-legged pancake race (what could possibly go wrong?). Keep an eye on Where The Pancakes Are for this year’s details.

Pancakes and prosecco at Duo, Camden

Prosecco? On a Tuesday? If you’ve heard of Duo, it’s probably for the legendary bottomless brunch, or Mean Girls afternoon tea. Pancake Day is equally decadent, pairing pancakes with prosecco (both bottomless), with Live DJs, dance-offs and sing alongs thrown in. Boss, can we have Ash Wednesday off work?

Pancake Day races in London this year

Flippin’ good fun in Greenwich Market

Tossers, get ready. Several pancake races take place in London on Shrove Tuesday, most of them in aid of charity.

Greenwich Market pancake race

Greenwich Market hosts one pancake race for the Saturday crowd, then does it all again on Shrove Tuesday itself. You’ll need to book a ticket if you want to take part, either on your own or as part of team, and fancy dress is encouraged. Each participant gets a free pancake to eat, there are medals to be won, and the whole event raises money for the Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice. No need to book if you just want to watch.

Leadenhall Market pancake race

We *could* make a joke about tossers in suits. But we won’t.

As mentioned above, The Lamb Tavern organises a pancake race around the cobbles of Leadenhall Market. It’s free to enter, and you’re advised to register your team in advance to guarantee a place. The winning team across the 20m course wins the coveted frying pan trophy — and pride, of course. Not bad for a lunch hour.

Bankside pancake race

Every year, teams from businesses based in Bankside take part in a pancake race around the area to raise money for art charity Paintings in Hospitals. If you don’t work in the area, you’re still welcome to go along and cheer the runners on.
