An overwhelming majority of people who responded to a Transport for London consultation survey on the new planned walking and cycling route between Dalston and Clapton gave it the thumbs up. Work on the project is due to start ‘in the Spring’ subject to final approvals being obtained.

After a three-month consultation which closed in September last year, 82 per cent of those who replied agreed the changes would enable more people to cycle, says TfL, with two thirds believing the work would see more people walking. TfL has just published a Consultation report and said the feedback received as ‘invaluable’.  A further consultation on the second phase of the project, linking Clapton and Lea Bridge closed in December and the results are awaited.

TfL said in a statement: “Cycleway provides an opportunity to improve the street network by encouraging walking and cycling increasing connectivity to key attractions, new developments, transport hubs and wider Cycleways network.”

The project is part of the Hackney Council and TfL plan to enable more people to cycle as part of their everyday routine, and will see a new Cycleway created, upgrades to junctions and new crossings, as well as lower speed limits.

More details about the projects on TfL’s website reveals that the first phase, between Dalston and Powell Road will include cycle crossings on the A10 with links to Cycle Superhighway 1 (CS1), new and updated pedestrian crossings in Crossway and Kingsland High Street, banning vehicles turning into Sandringham Road from Kingsland High Street, changes to parking and improved public spaces.

Will Norman, London’s walking and cycling commissioner, said on his Twitter account updating on the project: “Dalston to Clapton Cycleway: Less traffic, lower speeds, new cycleway, more trees, new pedestrian and cycle crossings. Construction begins this spring.”

TfL is still gathering feedback on the second stage of the project, which includes an overhaul of Lea Bridge Roundabout, and says it will give an update in spring.
