Mathoura Road by Carr Design

Carr Design bring bespoke luxury to seven apartments in Mathoura Road, Toorak.

Melbourne-based architecture and interior design practice Carr Design are no strangers to elevating the way people live, through their luxuriously-crafted homes. It’s something they’ve achieved for more than 40 years, led by founder and principal Sue Carr

With this approach they’ve mastered bespoke multi-residential design in Mathoura Road, Toorak, sharing a street with the iconic ‘Moonbria’, designed by Roy Grounds. Encased by handmade bricks sourced from Spain, their seven apartments set over a single level demonstrate a decidedly handcrafted take on design. Where tactile materials, clean lines and a warm, minimalist aesthetic pervade each space, Carr Design have defined a new standard of apartment living.

Carr Design Associate Director Stephen McGarry said Mathoura Road takes inspiration from its Toorak context in both form and scale. “As a historic suburb, we drew on the surrounding vernacular,” Stephen says. “We were also drawn to the iconic ‘Moonbria’ designed by Roy Grounds, which our project shares the street with.”

Sharing a street with Melbourne’s mid-century icon ‘Moonbria’, Carr Design drew on the area’s timeless design language, alongside the clients’ call for simplicity. This surfaces in the tones, materials and forms, as well as the innovative details – both inside and out.

“While the colour scheme and tones are soft and muted, the materiality is rich with texture, creating an elevated tactility through a combination of brushed and natural finishes.”

As with Roy Grounds’ ‘Moonbria’, there is no shortage of natural light or cross ventilation in the Mathoura Road apartments, oriented with views, aspects and openings in mind. The Carr Design team ensured the northern aspect drew light deep into the interior on overcast wintry days while reducing glare in the sunnier months. “Each of the seven apartments has been designed to provide liveability and interior comfort by incorporating sustainable principles such as orientation and cross ventilation,” Stephen says.

Externally, the handmade, linear bricks reflect the mid-century icon too. “Every single brick was made by hand in Spain and has an incredible warmth and natural softness,” Stephen says. The bricks are part of a wider, defining material palette that focuses on a high-quality, tactile and pared-back aesthetic. “Internally a honed, grey natural stone has been used in the kitchen and for other joinery details, which is then elevated by a reverse chamfer detail to the kitchen bench,” Stephen adds.

The team designed the kitchen space as both a statement and a hub, where a reverse chamfered detail creates soft edges. The Brushed Limestone slab in Duma Blue from Signorino tops the large kitchen island and wraps the sink; a highly-refined design detail.

The kitchen is also for equipped for a seasoned chef, featuring premium Gaggenau appliances. These include the Gaggenau Vario Gas Cooktop 400 Series, Gaggenau Vario Gas Wok 400 Series, Gaggenau 60cm Oven 200 Series Gaggenau Combination, Gaggenau Steam Oven 200 Series, Gaggenau Built-In Warming Draw 200 Series, Gaggenau 400 Series Integrated Dishwasher and Gaggenau Vario Wine Climate Cabinet 400 Series. A Liebherr Integrated Fridge with Biofresh and Liebherr Integrated All Freezer affirm the top-tier kitchen features.

In the master suite, Routed Limestone tiles in Duma Blue from Signorino echo the kitchen palette. “In the master ensuite, the natural stone has been routed with a detail that mimics the thickness of the exterior brickwork, creating an enveloping inside out rhythm,” Stephen explains.

Elsewhere, the interiors stick to the soft and muted palette. Furniture and objects reflect the same quality of design, such as the 637 Utrecht Armchairs by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld for Cassina, Charles Sofa by Antonio Citterio for B&B Italia and the Formiche Side Table by Piero Lissoni. A Behruz Studio rug also warms the space, along with Flos track light and the Oluce Atollo 235 Table Lamp.

Custom detailing and a no-compromise approach has ensured the success of Carr Design’s unique multi-residential design on Mathoura Road. “By applying the rigour and quality that goes into a single residential home, 97 Mathoura Road is an unexpected and sophisticated multi-residential project,” Stephen avows. “It shows the incredible liveability that can be achieved through thoughtful planning and design alongside quality and bespoke design elements.”
