7 Pairs of Jeans To Own Before You’re 30

We don’t like to be too prescriptive when it comes to our wardrobes, but from our experience there are definitely certain items that seem to crop up again and again in the capsules of the industry’s most stylish. Denim-wise, the same rule applies, and as a firm staple in our weekend wardrobe, we end up wearing the same styles on rotation.

After a quick survey of the Who What Wear office, we whittled down our favourites down to 7 styles. Of course, you can pick and choose as you wish, and if you find that a certain fit doesn’t suit your shape then delete accordingly, but if you’re feeling a little lost then use our denim guide to help you on your way. All of the below are guaranteed to be super versatile and also last for many more seasons to come. It’s a win-win situation. Scroll down to see and shop our edit.

Style Notes: White jeans are one of those items that you never thought you’d need until you buy them. Alexa swears by them, after all, and who are we to argue?

Style Notes: Skinny jeans might not be the height of fashion right now, but it’s safe to say that they have earnt their place as a denim failsafe in our wardrobes. Make like Camille and style yours with a belted blazer and baguette bag.

Style Notes: When sitting high on the waist and loose on the leg, the wide leg jean is one of the most flattering shapes you can buy (really). Just style with heeled boots and a fitted top to balance out the silhouette.

Style Notes: A firm fixture of ’90s fashion, the straight leg jeans has shot back into the spotlight over the last couple of years. Offering a laid-back finish and retro feel, they make for a great pairing with boots and chunky knitwear.

Style Notes: The flare might not be to everyone’s taste, but it a personal favourite of mine. When cut correctly it can lengthen legs like nothing else. I tend to wear mine with heeled ankle boots and tucked-in shirts for polished style.

Style Notes: After a quick survey of my Who What Wear colleagues, it transpired that black jeans were a recurring theme in their denim capsules. Whether you dress them up for dinner or throw together with a white tee, you know they’ll look good.

Style Notes: Okay, I know that this is technically a specific feature of various denim styles, but it’s clear that the noughties low-slung jean has well and truly been usurped by the high-waister, which is infinitely more figure-friendly. It’s a yes from us.
