Happy Tourbillon Day! Model Spotlight: Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Squelette 5395 Watch

On June 26th, 1801, Abraham-Louis Breguet received the patent for the tourbillon. 218 years later, the tourbillon remains one of the most prestigious and sought-after timepiece features and the Breguet brand proudly carries on its founder’s legacy of manufacturing innovative tourbillon watches.

Meaning “to whirl around” in French, a tourbillon is an extremely sophisticated and complex movement. In a tourbillon, the escapement and the balance wheel are mounted in a rotating cage, and the whole assembly is continuously moving. Due to the nature of the design, no matter what position the watch is in, timing variations are cancelled out. In many cases, the mechanism is exposed on the watch’s face as to show off its magnificence.

In honor or Tourbillon Day, let’s take a look at one of Breguet’s newest models, the Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Squelette 5395.

Introduced just this year, the timepiece has a completely skeletonized movement and a 41mm case that is only 3mm thick. Each part of the design is expertly finished with painstaking attention to detail. Sharp edges chamfered by hand, a guilloche pattern, which is a tribute to the classic Breguet design, and substantial hand-engraving work are all features that make this stunning timepiece stand out. In pink gold or platinum, the extra-thin case comes on an alligator strap with a gold or platinum folding buckle.
