Muneera Hamed Alsharhan from Kuwait is an artist who focuses on creating contemporary and art jewellery that offer something a little different.

Alsharhan exploits her extensive knowledge of Kuwait’s jewellery history and of the current market seeking to create a new authentic Kuwaiti jewellery culture. One not trapped in the past, respectful history yet focused on the future of this countries now youthful cultural demographic.

This flow and merging of old and new is reflected in the production of the collection, Alsharhan exploring traditional techniques alongside emerging jewellery technologies.

“The things we choose to put on our body say a lot about who we are. My pieces command attention alone, and when worn, shift the authority to who ever is wearing them,” she explains.

Her pieces are exquisitely intricate and set with coloured stones, a modern shift to diamond-driven collections long favoured by Arab jewellery lovers. Collections like “Daughters of the Moon” beautifully showcases the diversity and stunning qualities of the opal, while the “The Desert Blooms” line of fine jewellery is inspired by the native desert flora of Kuwait. She also works with dainty pieces, such as coin necklaces and “Mini Murtahash” necklaces that are ideal for layering together.

Muneera is Central Saint Martins graduate for Masters of Arts in Design: Jewellery and has aa Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jewelry and Metalsmithing from Rhode Island School of Design.

Instagam’s favourite jewellery brand to receive an award from Queen Elizabeth II

Royal approval

For those who love jewellery with an antique-style mismatched flair would already have invested in a few pieces from a London-based brand Alighieri.

Launched in 2014 by Rosh Mahtani, Oxford university alumni who loves Dante’s ‘Divine Comedy’ that the brand takes its name from, her pieces are cast in 24ct gold-plated bronze are inspired by literature and adventure.

An instant hit among the fashion pack and one of our personal favourite accounts to follow on Instagram, Alighieri can now claim a royal status as it’s going to receive The Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design at London Fashion Week this month. It will be presented by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen.

Mahtani will be recognised for the craftsmanship of her jewellery which is produced in Hatton Garden, for using responsibly sourced materials, promoting local manufacturing and supporting employment. The unique pieces are made through the process of lost-wax casting at some of the oldest local suppliers.  Just like Dante Alighieri’s subjects, each piece of jewellery is unique, battered and imperfect.

The Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design was initiated in recognition of the role the fashion industry plays in society and diplomacy and the movement of young designers that are both talented and making a difference to society through either sustainable practices or community engagement.

The inaugural Award was announced and presented to Richard Quinn in February 2018 when The Queen made Her Majesty’s first visit to London Fashion Week. In 2019, the prestigious Award was presented to Bethany Williams by The Duchess of Cornwall.
