Clover, The Mix-Breed Pup, Recovering Nicely After Operation To Remove Bullet Fragments From Jaw

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A puppy found after she was found wandering the streets in the Redland with a gunshot wound to the jaw is recovering nicely after undergoing surgery.

The pup named Clover, a female Doberman mix, is about a year old and was found near SW 216th Street and 209th Avenue, according to a group called the “Redland Rockpit Abandoned Dogs.”

On Tuesday, we got our first look at post-surgery Clover, who was up and about already.

Dr. Briana Danielson at Hollywood Animal Hospital performed the surgery on Clover.

She was able to recover the bullet and fragments.

“That bullet did hit the lower jaw area,” Dr. Danielson said while pointing at an x-ray. “Most of the impact was in this region, where we had our necrotic bone and probably ricocheted up into the cheek.”

Dr. Danielson figures Clover was walking around with that bullet for more than a week.

“Some of the bone associated with the lower jaw is what we call necrotic, or what you might say, rotten.  So that bone cannot be fixed,” she said.

Most of Clover’s lower jaw had to be removed.

Right now, she’s sore and swollen but she’s expected to recover well.

She’ll have to learn how to eat again after such a cruel act cost her part of her jaw. For now, she’s being fed through a feeding tube.

The Doberman Rescue League will eventually put Clover up for adoption. They’re amazed at how well she’s doing.

“For everything she’s been through, that fact that she can still see a human being and wag her tail and accept a hand to touch her, dogs are resilient, they’re amazing animals,” said Ginny Wargo from Doberman Rescue League.

The Grateful Paws and Doberman Rescue League worked together to get donations to pay the medical bill.

The Hollywood Animal Hospital said they’ve already raised enough money to cover Clover’s bill.

Animal Group: Bullet Removed From Puppy Found Roaming SW Miami-Dade

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A puppy is getting much-needed help Monday afternoon after she was found wandering the streets in the Redland with a gunshot wound to the jaw.

A group called “Redland Rockpit Abandoned Dogs” said the female Doberman mix named Clover is about a year old and was found near Southwest 216th Street and 209th Avenue.

“She got basically half of the jaw hanging, full of blood and everything. After the evaluation, they found metal parts on the jaw. That’s why they believe she’s been shot,” said Esteban Lopez of the Doberman Rescue League.

The Doberman Rescue League and Grateful Paws teamed up with the Hollywood Animal Hospital to get her some help. On Monday, vets were evaluating her, checking to see what can be done.

“I believe she’s missing a little part of the tongue also and a few teeth,” Lopez said.

Clover is said to be feeling better after getting cleaned up and on pain meds.

“We do see some metal pieces inside there, indicative of a possible gunshot, we don’t really know. But then on top of that, she does have half her to a quarter of her tongue missing,” said Dr. Natalie Savo of Hollywood Animal Hospital. “We have two routes, we don’t know if she’ll have the route where she keeps her jaw or if she’ll have the route where she gets a little bit of a change-up and she’ll get half of that jaw removed to get rid of dead tissue and dead bone.”

It turned out those metal fragments where indeed from a gunshot wound. A bullet was eventually removed from Clover’s cheek and much of her jaw had to be removed.

The good news is that the surgery was a success. And after treatment, Clover will be going to a foster home.

“The great thing about Clover and her recovery is that she is going to not only get the TLC here, but she’s also then going to live with a family in their home and be very comfortable in her recovery,” said Jill Banaszak of Grateful Paws.

Police have been notified. For now, rescuers are just hoping she can get the help she needs.

“I can’t even think who would do something like that,” Lopez said.

Rescuers are just grateful they were in the right place at the right time to save this young dog.

“Sometimes it’s just in the timing. Sometimes we’re early, sometimes we’re late. Sometimes it just was our luck to be there yesterday,” said Bonnie Rubenstein of the Redland Rockpit Abandoned Dogs.

Boy, 3, Dies Despite Good Samaritans’ Efforts To Lift, Free Minor From Under Vehicle In Homestead

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Despite heroic efforts by good Samaritans, a three-year-old boy could not be saved after the minor ended up pinned under a vehicle Friday afternoon in Homestead.

Police said a driver lost control, as the vehicle was heading north in 300th block US 1, and it ended up plowing into a roadside Valentine’s Day stand.

Florida Hiway Patrol accident investigators were working into the night sorting out what happened.

“I heard everybody screaming and I just ran over there, I saw them trying to lift the car, I didn’t know why,” said good Samaritan, Alex Correa.

Correa is a mechanic who was working across the street. He quickly learned everyone was trying to lift the car because a young boy was trapped underneath.

“All the people just trying to lift the car. One guy got a pipe, I don’t know from where he put it under and that helped a little bit. We all just lift on the passenger side,” Correa said.

At the same time, another mechanic ran over with a heavy-duty jack to help, but before he could get there the boy had been pulled out.

“One of the guys went under and actually slid him out because we barely lift the tire a little bit, so he could get out. It’s something, honestly, I’ve never seen anything like that.

The boy was airlifted to Kendall Regional Hospital.

The Florida Highway Patrol confirms the boy did not survive. People on the scene believe he was under the Valentine Tent with his parents when it happened. For those who tried to help, it’s tough news to hear.

“I wish I could have done more, do something quicker. Sometimes, it just happens,” Correa said.

The driver of a gray Dodge Charger remained at the scene.

“He was clearly upset and on the floor crying. He could not handle himself,” said witness Shelly Hart.

No word on what may have caused the driver of the Charger to lose control.

No charges have been filed at this point, as the FHP continues to investigate.
