Where I’m At

It’s been a while guys.

I haven’t sat down here at my computer and actually typed a proper blog in a very long time. I’m not going to promise this will be the first of many, but it is the first for a while, so I thought I’d let you know what was happening in my life.

A lot of you follow me on Instagram, which is where I share daily videos of what I’m up to.

This is the best space for you guys to stay updated if you are ever wondering.

Ok so we’re in 2020. I have an 8 year old girl and a 6 year old boy. Both of whom are at school right now, and I can tell you this coffee has never tasted better.

Even though they’re older, they still never stop saying my name – “MUM”.

In fact, they could be quiet, and when I get a cup of coffee, they’ll suddenly remember that I’m there and will bombard me with questions. Needless to say, this quiet moment alone, is being enjoyed immensly.

At the beginning of this year, I took a bit of a step back from myself (aka I had a crisis) and have made a lot of changes in my life.

  • I’ve stopped drinking alcohol. Call it “sober curious” or whatever, it’s working for me and I love it.
  • I have cut out caffeine; I only drink decaf now.
  • I have reduced my dairy intake considerably; instead of cow’s milk I now drink almond / coconut milk.
  • I wake up early most mornings and spend 5-10 minutes meditating.
  • I read, I consume; I find books that are suitable for the state I’m in to help me understand how I might be feeling, and how best to move forward. At this stage I’m keeping the titles of those books to myself as they’re quite personal to my own journey, but reading has been so helpful.
  • I have started exercising again. I’m not the biggest fan of exercise, but my mind is. So I do 30 minutes each morning, before the kids wake up, on a stationary bike.
  • I am working hard to create healthy eating habits – my habits are horrible and are so up and down.

So yeah I know it’s only February, but I’m in the most stable place I’ve been in a long time.

I’m 37 years old guys. I have no fucking clue what I’m doing with myself or my life (does anyone?!).

But I’m always striving to be the best I can.

Whether it’s my health or my parenting.

I know I don’t have toddlers anymore, but the 6/8 year old range are bringing their own challenges.

Hope you are all doing ok out there.

Will definitely try and get writing these again. Even if it’s just once a week

xx

PS I will definitely chat more about my journey with alcohol, but it’s very much a personal experience and I”m not really sure how to explain the whole thing haha

Parents Create Epic Harry Potter Themed Baby Room

I don’t know about you, but I love Harry Potter. I could read the books and watch the movies over and over again. The obsession is real.

Anytime I find something Harry Potter related, our friends’ group chat is lit with photos of the product, and us asking “do you want me to grab you one?”

From pyjamas, to wands, to mugs, socks. We have a lot of Harry Potter merchandise.

One of my friends has combined her love of Nicholas Cage and Harry Potter and has a tee shirt with Harry Potter characters but with Nicholas Cage faces.

We are all obsessed.

Well imagine my utter joy when I saw a family online had created an absolutely magical bedroom for their baby.

Sit down. Get ready to zoom in too because the attention to detail is off the chain …

This room was created in 2016, so imagine what the kids’ room looks like now!

What do you think? Is this something you’d do?

I Worry A Lot About My Kids

I know most parents worry about their kids, but I feel like I worry A LOT about mine. Maybe I’m not alone in this, I’m not sure.

Naturally I don’t want my kids to hurt themselves and sometimes can get overly worried about it. I can’t help it; it’s just who I am.

My husband is a bit of the opposite (but not EXTREMELY opposite), and I look to him in a lot of situations, for advice. I look to see where his boundaries are, and if it’s further than my own; I’ll usually let go whatever issues I have. Because I trust him.

Of course I let them do the things they need to do to be children (even extreme things), because I don’t want my worry to stifle my children’s ability to learn and grow, and experience life.

I am all too aware of my own issues having an effect on my children; and I refuse to let that happen.

I trust my husband to look after the kids (obviously), and I trust that he will let them do things to a certain point and then pull them back. It’s just that his “point” is a bit further than mine.

He will let them be much more adventurous than I will, without worry.

Although, of course there are times when I put my foot down and will say to Phil “No, not on my watch – if you want to let that happen, do it when I’m not around”.

I’d let them do stuff (I’m talking extreme stuff, not the normal stuff haha), but I’d be overcome with worry the whole time. Often it’s easier for me to let them be with my husband without me around, because as I said above, I don’t want my issues stopping them from living their lives.

A few days ago, my son broke his arm (his first break, and hopefully last!) whilst on the trampoline.

We have a Springfree Trampoline, which means the springs are underneath; and it’s surrounded by an amazingly strong netting. You’d think given how safe it was, breaking an arm wouldn’t be something that would happen easily. Or if it happened, it would be from when they got OFF the trampoline.

Well no, my son and his sister were playing with water-balloons (it’s a favourite game of theirs in the summer, and has been for years). My son (who is 6) thought it would be funny to pull a “prank fall”, which meant falling silly, and he landed on his elbow and it broke.

He ended up in hospital overnight, needing surgery to realign the bones, and then k-wires to secure. It wasn’t the nicest experience for him, but he got through.

If I wasn’t already paranoid about stuff like this, I am more now and I tell you what – it’s going to take every strength in my being to allow him back on that trampoline.

I’ll do it though, and I’ll do all the things I have to to ensure my kids don’t feel like I’m holding them back.

But I’ll still worry. And if my gut says NO too strongly then I will listen to it.

Do you guys get paranoid / worried about your kids? Do you have to do what I do and just let it go? Or do you have other coping mechanisms?

I’d truly love to know!

The Australian Fires – Ways You Can Help

Australia is quite literally on fire – and has been for some time now; since November 2019. This isn’t something that is new, but it has since escalated with the rising Summer temperatures, and the lack of rain.

I live in Auckland, New Zealand; and yesterday was the first time I’ve seen some of the fallout from this – our skies were clouded by a sepia-coloured smoke haze for most of the afternoon. It was bizarre but a very needed reminder that this is still happening.

Thinking about all of the people and wildlife affected by these fires makes me incredibly sad, and I wish so badly that I could do more to help. I have donated via the Red Cross Australia website and through Celeste Barber’s fundraiser. I’ve also been sharing as much as I can on social media.

A lot of people are confused about where to donate and what to do, and I wish I could tell you the answer. but I don’t have one. Instead, I am going to list a bunch of places below that you can check out and if you like – donate to them.

Donating direct to the people who can help this situation is what’s best.

————————-

HOW CAN I HELP THE PEOPLE?

Here are some links to organisations / fundraisers that will be helping people direct:

Australian Red Cross

The Australian Red Cross supports communities affected by the bushfires. Thanks to donations made so far, the charity has been able to deploy 1,285 trained staff and volunteers to disaster-affected communities.

Salvation Army Australia

Salvation Army Emergency Services (SAES) teams are responding to devastating bushfires around Australia as an unprecedented number of emergency-level fires cause tragic loss of life and property.

Foodbank

Donate food, funds or services to Foodbank, the largest hunger-relief charity in Australia

Celeste Barber’s Fundraiser

Celeste Barber started a fundraiser with funds going to the NSW Fire Service & Brigades.

St Vincent’s De Paul Society

They are also running a bushfire appeal, to help those affected rebuild their lives with food, clothing, furniture, other essentials, and funds to pay bills.

Air BNB

Extra room in your home? Offer to host people in need of emergency housing on AirBnB.

————————-

HOW CAN I HELP THE FIREFIGHTERS?

Here are some links to organisations / fundraisers that will be helping the firefighters direct:

Queensland Royal Fire Brigades Association

Help support the firefighters on the ground in Queensland.

NSW Rural Fire Service

RFS volunteers and NSW Fire and Rescue officers have been battling the fires and saving lives day and night and they need your help.

Victoria Country Fire Authority

The Victorian Firefighters are hard at work and need your help!

South Australian Country Fire Service

South Australia is burning too and their firefighters are hard at work and need your support!

————————-

HOW CAN I HELP THE ANIMALS?

Here are some links to organisations / fundraisers that will be helping the people / organisations / animals direct:

Wires

Wires help rescue sick, injured and orphaned wildlife.

Wildlife Rescue Sunshine Coast

Please give a helping hand to those amazing volunteers across the country who are trying to save what’s left of our beautiful wildlife.

Port Macquarie Koala Hospital

The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, and National Parks and Wildlife Service crew leaders, have spent weeks searching for koalas following the devastating bush fires in the Port Macquarie area. To date, 31 koalas have been brought to the hospital from several fire grounds.

World Wide Life Fund

These guys are directing their effort towards Koala conservation.

RSPCA NSW

The RSPCA NSW are helping evacuate, rescue and treat pets and wildlife in threatened areas.

During this time it’s very easy to feel helpless – heck most of us can’t do anything other than sit back and send our love and prayers.

Donate if you can, where you can.

Here’s a neat little reminder I saw online:

Egg & Tomato Dish

My husband is half Chinese, and when we were dating we used to eat this “egg and tomato” dish. I had no idea what it was, but it was delicious. It seemed simple, but very tasty.

When Phil and I got married, and he started showing me the things he cooked; and I got to learn about how to make it – it is easy.

Because my in-laws (his parents) are market gardeners, they grow tomatoes. So we have an abundance of them. Which means we have this dish weekly and I highly recommend it.

This recipe serves 4 people. If you don’t have fresh tomatoes, you can always use a can of tomatoes instead.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 x tablespoons olive oil

  • 6 x ripe tomatoes (cut into small chunks)
OR instead of ripe tomatoes, you can simply use a 1/2 a CAN of tomatoes

  • 6 x eggs (whisked together in a bowl)

  • 1 x tablespoon water

  • 1 x tablespoon minced garlic

  • Pinch of salt and pepper

  • 1 x teaspoon sugar

  • 1 x vegetable stock cube

  • Cooked rice

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil to a non-stick pan, and heat over a medium to high heat.

  2. Once heated up, add the eggs and tablespoon of water, and cook as if you’re cooking scrambled eggs. Once cooked, transfer to a bowl.

  3. Reduce heat to medium, and in the pan (don’t rinse out), add another teaspoon of olive oil and add the garlic and tomatoes.

  4. Cook the tomatoes for 10 minutes until softened.

  5. Once the tomatoes are softened softened add the salt and pepper, sugar and vegetable stock cube.

  6. Mix and then add the cooked egg.

  7. Cook for another 5 minutes.

  8. Serve with cooked rice.

We use cherry tomatoes, and do a lot of them. We also use 8 eggs because of the amount of cherry tomatoes.

For rice, we usually cook around 250 grams for the 4 of us. So figure that out for whatever you’re doing.

My Kids Are At School Now And I Feel Lost

When I became a parent, it was the scariest thing ever. I couldn’t wait to become a Mum, but the moment my baby was born, I had no clue what I was doing.

I felt incredibly lost.

I’d spent 28 years just worrying about myself, and now I was responsible for a baby – it freaked me out.

I struggled a lot, got post natal depression, struggled more and couldn’t wait for them to grow up and be a little more independent.

Now it’s been 7 years and both of my kids are at school. My youngest (who is 5) started school at the beginning of this year.

It’s taken me a long time to want to admit this, but I feel kinda lost.

I don’t have kids with me 24/7 (as they’re at school), but thankfully I have my blog / social media channels to keep me busy. I also earn a little from this, which allows me to continue to stay at home.

So it’s not that I’m bored, in fact I love doing what I’m doing. I just don’t really know what I’m doing.

I just feel lost; it’s like I have no place in this world.

It’s the weirdest feeling ever.

It’s like I’m a little irrelevant.

I still go through the motions as a parent – wake up, make the lunches, get the kids breakfast, get them ready for school, drop them off.

Then there’s this gap in the day, and I jump back into parenting at the end of it.

Of course, parenting is more than just about those moments when the kids are around – there’s a lot of thinking, planning and worrying.

However, I feel like something is missing.

I have no idea what it is, but I still feel lost.

Does any of that make sense? I just had this urge to get it out of my head, and this is what came out. Let me know if you’ve felt like that …
