Blue shampoo – what is it, and how does it help brown hair?

blue shampoo for brown hair

Brown-haired and haven’t heard of using blue shampoo before? Listen up, as it could help you get the most out of your dyed or natural colour.

Most people associate brassiness or unwanted warm tones with bottle blondes. But the truth is that brunettes may experience some unwanted orange or reddish hues when a cool brown is preferable, regardless of whether they colour your hair.

Although it’s perhaps the lesser well-known of the two, blue shampoo is to brown hair what the best purple shampoo is to cool-girl blonde. Intrigued? Keep reading for everything you need to know and the blue shampoos to try now.

How does blue shampoo for brown hair work?

‘Although it appears not to be as widely known, brunettes also find that they are left with unwanted brassy tones coming through if they lighten their hair and/or have balayage,’ says legenedary hairdresser and colourist Josh Wood. ‘This can happen as a result of the sun, product they may use and pollution. ‘Meanwhile brunettes with virgin hair will often find that they have unwanted warmer tones too.’

The term blue shampoo is pretty self-explanatory – the shampoo formula is enriched with blue pigments that infuse in to the hair. Won’t that turn my hair blue, we hear you ask? Not quite, as the process is a little bit more scientific than that.

If you think about the colour wheel, blue is opposite orange and therefore has the ability to ‘cool down’ these tones in your hair ‘Blue shampoo is a neutralising shampoo that will reduce and neutralise orange and brassy tones in the hair,’ Josh explains. ‘Redken Brownlights Shampoo is a great way to tone your hair; the blue pigments work quickly and give incredible, cool results.’

Leave your formula on the hair for a few minutes to really get the most out of those blue pigments, and most formulas advise using gloves so as not to stain your hands blue.

Ready to take away that brassiness from your brown hair? Shop some of the hero blue shampoo formulas on the market right now in our round-up below.

In a release, the brand says the new launches comes as more consumers “are choosing to embrace their natural hair colour and texture” which has in turn created “demand for products that nurture and enhance grey, silver and white shades.” In addition to their shine properties, the new launches are also packed with ingredients to help restore strength and elasticity, as well as hydration.

We spoke with Yasmin Mortazavi, the marketing and category manage for Oribe Canada, who said that the line was formulated specifically to help protect aging hair from environmental aggressors and discolouration, specifically the yellowing of the strands. “Oribe carefully crafts every product to treat specific hair needs and concerns. In the case of aging hair, key ingredients are used to prevent dullness, yellow tones and loss of elasticity,” she tells us. “For example, Arctic Root Extract helps restore and maintain elasticity to improve the texture of aging hair; Snow Mushroom Extract instantly hydrates and helps maintain the natural moisture barrier of hair and scalp; Argan Oil adds lightweight shine, softens wiry, brittle hair and helps protect from breakage; European Silver Fir Extract intensely hydrates to protect against pollution and free radical damage while preventing the signs of premature aging and a blend of blue and silver pigments brightens grey, silver and white hair, eliminates yellow tones and helps prevent discoloration.”

Both products are also dermatologist-tested, free from parabens, sulfates and sodium chloride, as well as being vegan, cruelty-free and gluten-free. The line hits counters across Canada and Oribe.com this month.

The best purple shampoo for every shade of blonde out there

They say that blondes have more fun, but there’s nothing fun about brassy tones

purple shampoo for blonde hair

There’s nothing quite like a beautiful blonde mane. Which is why brassy tones are the devil. Brassiness dulls the hair, when really what you want is bright vibrant colour that sparkles in the sun. If you’re not sure if you fall into this camp or not, take a look in the mirror and if your blonde is quite yellow and buttery, then you need to get your hands on the best purple shampoo.

Considering peroxide-mania has no sign of slowing down, the only way to keep your hair colour in check is by washing it with a great purple or silver shampoo. Nothing brightens the hair like it.

What is purple shampoo?

‘Purple shampoo neutralises the yellow in blonde hair leaving a creamy to ash result,’ explains master hairdresser and colourist Josh Wood. ‘Redken Blondage – colour depositing shampoo and conditioner for blonde hair – features ultra-violet pigment and Triple Acid Protein complex tones to leave you with brighter and stronger blonde hair.’

Think of the colour wheel from art lessons. Just as you would counteract ruddiness in your skin tone with a green colour corrector, the same rule applies to your hair. Why? Because yellow and purple are opposite to each other on the colour wheel, a cool toned violet shampoo will counteract any yellowy tones that start to shine through dyed or bleached blonde hair after a while.

When you wash with this particular shade of shampoo, it deposits purple pigment into your hair, negating brassiness and brightening the silver tones throughout your hair. Don’t believe us? Have you seen the results of the Redken Blondage Shampoo?

The best part? You only have to use it once or twice a week for maintenance, so one bottle will last you until your next colour appointment. ‘Thw purple shampoo domination has led to an increase in the number of women searching for customised care online to look after their coloured locks,’ Josh continues. ‘However, the hair-scape is changing and super salons now offer game changing services that cater for brondes, blondes and those looking to go beyond with silver and pastel accents.’

The best way to use it is after washing your hair first with your normal shampoo. If you use a purple shampoo to wash your hair, it will do just that – wash the hair, rather than tone it. After you’ve washed your hair, coat it in the purple shampoo. Be careful not to let it sit on your hair for too long, as it can turn the hair slightly violet – which actually looks pretty amazing, if you’re game for it.

Ali Pirzadeh, a celebrity and fashion hair stylist, recommends using your normal conditioner afterwards, ‘I wouldn’t bother with the purple conditioners as well, as you want to make sure your hair is still being nourished.’ Be sure to use a the best shampoo for dry hair in between uses as purple shampoo can be a little drying.

Purple shampoo vs silver shampoo

Purple shampoos are often called silver shampoos, and the two are pretty much the same – in fact, most of the products labelled ‘silver’ are actually purple in pigment.

We’ve pulled together the cream of the crop to help you find the best purple shampoo. And there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for the best shampoo for oily hair or one that will give you more grit for styling. And that’s not all. We’ve also pulled together some natural options, so if you have a sensitive scalp, you’re in luck.

When Kérastase launched their Blond Absolu range earlier this year, it took the blonde world by storm. It consists of five hardworking products that promise to banish any brassiness, whilst nourishing each strand simultaneously.

It was created with skincare as the inspiration, using a combination of hyaluronic acid – to hydrate and full and repair the fibre from within – and edelweiss flower, which protects the hair from daily external damage. 11 Looks That Show Balayage Works on Short Hair Too

Balayage is the hair trend that’s on everyone’s lips, a word that’s either immediately understood when mentioned in conversation or completely escapes you. It’s basically a trend that’s changed the hair colour game.

You won’t see any foil when going for balayage, as this technique, which is French for «to sweep» or «to paint,» focuses on freehand painted sweeps of colours instead of those telltale stripes.

This hair-dye trend is all about that natural, just-been-kissed-by-the-sun lightening of the hair for a really subtle and refreshed look. So subtle that there aren’t any obvious lines, as the colour is perfectly blended. Of course, the bonus here is that you won’t have to worry about anyone spotting your regrowth.

If you’ve been thinking about updating your look, balayage just might be the hair-colour refresh you’ve been looking for. Keep scrolling to see our favourite balayage styles.

Create volume and softness to show off your colour with tousled ends.

Ends that look so sun-kissed that people will be asking where your last holiday was.

Make like Natalie Portman and emphasise your colour with ever so gently curled ends.

Blunt ends and ice-blonde tones? The perfect match.

Ciara is synonymous with a shoulder grazing bob, but this multi-tonal style might be our favourite one yet.

Proof that all hair colours can get in on the balayage action.

Interested in pastel tones but don’t want it to look too obvious? This subtle take is the best of both worlds.

Crinkled waves, hair pushed back behind the ears and nesting on a crisp coat collar. What’s there not to love?

Dark hair was made for this trend with lighter sweeps of colour at the top and building up to the ends for a natural finish.

Follow Naomie Harris by adding an unexpected yet precisely blended colour at the ends.

Mess things up a bit by going for a dishevelled wet look to make those painted streaks stand out.

Now that you’ve got all of the balayage hair inspo you need, here are all the products that will keep your hair colour looking salon-fresh.

The age-old question is always how to upkeep your colour in between appointments. Well, this is your answer. Available for both darker and lighter hair, this product will balance your colour and give it that all-important boost.

Brassy tones aren’t where it’s at, so to avoid that on fair hair, slot this moisture-boosting shampoo into your hair routine. Your coloured strands will thank you for it.

For hair lacking lustre, shine and feeling a bit stripped from the colouring process, enter this decadent wash. With chestnut milk and rice protein, your hair will be protected and deeply conditioned.

Is there anything better than drenching your hair in a rich and creamy mask? There is, and it’s this raw coconut mask enriched with argan and linseed oil to combat dry and limp locks.

People go absolutely wild for this beloved drugstore conditioner. If you’re looking for an affordable way to look after your balayage, this is a great option.

Designed to add much-needed shine to coloured hair, this also has UV filters to stop your hair colour from fading. If you don’t want to swap out your shampoo and conditioner, this spray is a must-have. Up next, the spring/summer 2020 fashion trends we’ll be wearing this year.
