Drew Carey Endorses Petition for Domestic Violence Reform After Death of Ex-Fiancee Amie Harwick

An online petition to reform domestic violence laws following the death of Amie Harwick, a prominent marriage and family therapist who authorities allege was attacked by an ex-boyfriend, had attracted more than 16,000 supporters as of Tuesday afternoon — including Harwick’s former fiance, TV star Drew Carey.

Carey endorsed the “Justice 4 Amie” petition on Twitter, asking his more than 600,000 followers to sign and support the effort. The “Price is Right” host had previously said in a statement that he was “overcome with grief” over Harwick’s death.

The proposals outlined in the petition, which is addressed to a cadre of California lawmakers and elected officials, include requiring mandatory in-person, long-term counseling for domestic violence perpetrators, providing accommodations so victims do not have to testify in close proximity to their abusers and establishing a registry, similar to the one in place for sex offenders, “to warn others of the deviant behavior.”

Diana Arias, who started the petition, wrote that “domestic violence is a serious concern for everyone” and Harwick “was murdered as a result of poor laws not protecting the victims and treating the offenders.”

Hollywood Therapist Died of Blunt Force Injuries to Her Head, Torso: Coroner’s Office

Amie Harwick, a well-known marriage and family therapist, died of blunt force injuries to her head and torso after she was attacked at her Hollywood Hills home over the weekend, Los Angeles County coroner officials said Tuesday.

Authorities allege that woman’s ex-boyfriend Gareth Pursehouse, 41, of Playa del Rey attacked the 38-year-old Harwick early Saturday morning.

LAPD officers were sent to the home in the 2000 block of Mound Street in response to a report of a woman screaming. When officers arrived, they were met by Harwick’s roommate who told them Harwick was being assaulted in the home. The roommate had jumped a wall to escape the house and call for help, police said.

Officers found Harwick on the ground, beneath a third-story balcony, with grave injuries consistent with a fall, police said. She was taken to a hospital, where she later died.

Slain Hollywood Therapist Had Chance Encounter With Ex-Boyfriend Before He Allegedly Killed Her

In the years after she left a toxic relationship with a freelance photographer, Amie Harwick thrived. She earned a doctorate in human sexuality, built a busy therapy practice, authored an erotic manual for women and enjoyed a high-profile romance with comedian Drew Carey.

Then last month, she ran into the ex-boyfriend, Gareth Pursehouse, at a professional event that she was attending and he was assigned to photograph.

“It was the absolute worst possible luck,” said Beverly Hills sex therapist Hernando Chaves, a close friend who was with Harwick at the event. The chance encounter, Chaves said, seemed to “reignite his obsessive preoccupation with her.”

Harwick, 38, was fatally attacked in her Hollywood Hills residence early Saturday morning, and authorities have arrested Pursehouse, a 41-year-old from Playa del Rey, on suspicion of murder. According to his LinkedIn account, Pursehouse has worked as a software developer and a photographer.

‘I Am Overcome With Grief:’ Drew Carey Mourns Death of Ex-Fiancée Amie Harwick

Comedian Drew Carey is mourning the death of his ex-fiancée Amie Harwick, writing in a social media post that he was “lucky” that she was a part of his life.

“The Price Is Right” host tweeted on Monday what appeared to be a holiday image of him and Harwick sitting on a throne next to a Christmas tree with animated polar bears surrounding them.

“I hope you’re lucky enough to have someone in your life that loves as much as she did,” Carey wrote in the tweet.

Harwick, 38, was found unresponsive and “gravely injured” beneath a third-story balcony at her home early Saturday morning, according to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department.

The LAPD said officers were responding to reports of a “woman screaming” in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood where Harwick lived when they found her.

Police said her injuries were consistent with a fall and she was transported to a local hospital where she died. Officers found possible evidence of a struggle in Harwick’s home as well as forced entry, the LAPD said.

Harwick’s ex-boyfriend, Gareth Pursehouse, 41, was arrested Saturday afternoon in connection with the case and is being held on a $2 million bail, according to jail records.

Police said Harwick had recently expressed fear for her safety due to a former boyfriend and had previously filed a restraining order against him.

Harwick was a well-known therapist in West Hollywood, specializing in family and sex counseling. She regularly appeared on podcasts, TV and her YouTube channel to discuss her work.

Carey, 61, was engaged to Harwick in 2018, but the couple broke up less than a year later.

“Amie and I had a love that people are lucky to have once in a lifetime,” Carey said in a statement to People magazine. “She was positive force in the world, a tireless and unapologetic champion for women, and passionate about her work as a therapist. I am overcome with grief. I would like to thank you in advance for giving myself and everyone who loved Amie privacy while we try to work through this tragic situation.”

Vulture reported that “The Price Is Right” has postponed taping for the week in the wake of Harwick’s death.
