2973 Covid cases in 24 hrs: Delhi breaks 70-day record for single-day spike

With 2,973 fresh Covid-19 cases in the 24 hours, Delhi on Saturday saw the highest single-day spike in the last 70 days. The previous highest was on June 26 when the national capital recorded 3,460 Covid-19 cases.

After Saturday’s figure, Delhi’s total Covid-19 case tally now stands at 1,88,193. Of these, 1,63,785 have recovered and 19,870 have died.

Delhi has been seeing a spike in daily case numbers for the past few days. This comes against the backdrop of weeks of witnessing a declining trend.

On Friday, Delhi recorded 2,914 fresh coronavirus cases, the highest single-day spike here in 69 days. This is the fourth successive day in September when over 2,000 new coronavirus cases have been reported in a day.

As per the Delhi government, at least 10,514 people are currently in home isolation. Besides this, nearly 2,337 beds in Covid care centres are currently occupied by people under quarantine, including those who returned from abroad under the central government’s Vande Bharat Mission and Bubble flights.

Earlier in the day, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged the people of Delhi not to panic seeing the rising number of Covid-19 cases. He claimed Covid-19 cases in the national capital are rising because the Delhi government has increased the number of tests.

«We have doubled testing, started testing at markets, bus stands, Mohalla Clinics etc. Test, test, test. Isolate infected people and provide them good treatment. I have told officers not to worry if the numbers increase due to multi-fold testing (sic),» Arvind Kejriwal said in a tweet.

In another tweet, the Delhi CM said there are sufficient number of hospital beds for Covid-19 patients. «Presently, there are 14,000 beds available in Delhi, of which only 5,000 are occupied,» he said.
