Madrid Horse Racing Is Back

A short lived season opened La Zarzuela Racecourse on 1st March but was closed with the lockdown 2 weeks later. A wait of 3 months and closed doors races started on 14th June and from 9th July running every Thursday evening for international meets until the 27th September.

The Madrid racecourse will have a total of 11 meets on Thursdays and Sundays with a total of 55 races including some that had been previously cancelled.

There remains social distancing and health protocols including a maximum allowed capacity of 75% of the total, online only ticket sales and face masks to be worn.

The Zarzuela' Hippodrome was constructed in the 1930´s albeit with delays due to the ongoing civil war and was subsequently opened in 1941 becoming a popular Madrid attraction in the 1960´s and 70s´before entering a period of decline until its eventual closure in 1996 and refurbishment in 2003 as a refurbished and vibrant horse racing venue.

In the summer months the Hippodrome has popular evening meets where dinner and racing has proved a popular combination.

Complimentary public transport is provided to and from the venue from the Moncloa interchange from one before meets to one hour after meet ends.
