The Met Office has issued a new warning of another storm heading for the UK, saying expected high winds could pose a risk to life.
With the country still clearing up after Storm Ciara, another weather system, to be named Storm Dennis, could cause even more chaos, it is feared. The storm will bring winds of up to 70mph and flooding to the UK this weekend.
Storm Ciara caused damage across the country, with roads closed and trees being brought down by the strong winds.
In Hackney, cars were damaged by a falling tree in Stoke Newington, and Grayling Road was closed after a fallen tree closed the junction with Lordship Road for many hours.
Hackney police and public transport staff urged the public “not to travel unless absolutely necessary”, with an amber weather warning in place. Even sporting events like Manchester City’s home game with West Ham were postponed, along with the Women’s Six Nations rugby championship including England’s match against Scotland.
The storm brought a month and a half’s worth of rainfall in 24 hours for some parts of the UK, leading to flooding and power cuts for more than half a million households.
With weather experts predicting Storm Dennis will be “the worst in seven years”, the Met Office issued the following forecast. “Very strong winds in association with Storm Dennis are expected on Saturday across many parts of England and Wales”. They urged people to take care and added:
“With further warnings possible over the next few days, people should keep up to date with the Met Office forecast.”
