I Just Know I'll Be Living in These 5 Knitwear Trends This Spring

Knitwear is most commonly associated with winter, but let me politely remind you that this is Britain, and you can be pretty sure that 350 days out of the calendar year will likely call for knitwear. I know this all too well, as I currently reside in Edinburgh, which frequently comes out on top as one of the UK’s chilliest cities. Even though my mind is firmly fixated on spring, knitwear must still play a pivotal role in my outfit planning. That, dear readers, is where this article comes in.

I’ve scanned the S/S 20 catwalks to bring you the top spring knitwear trends this year has in store. Yes, you read that right—spring knitwear. One of the key looks of the new season is easy layering, and nothing is as easy to layer as a loose-fitting cardigan that slides delicately off the shoulder, or a cable-knit jumper worn neatly over a pie-crust collar blouse and tucked into jeans.

While there are plenty of knitwear looks you can try right now, we’re taking our cues from the catwalk by honing in on these five runway-approved trends. Scroll below to see (and shop) the top knitwear to stock up on for spring 2020.

It may be golfing attire, but the humble polo shirt has been given a fashionable overhaul with sharp collars and elongated fastenings.

Florals for spring mightn’t be groundbreaking but, sweetly embroidered onto jumpers and cardigans, they seamlessly bridge the gap between winter and summer.

While the cardigan scene has been largely dominated by oversized styles, the trend is now taking a more elegant turn with defined belted waistlines.

If you too stash your Fair Isle knits away with your Christmas decorations, you may wish to rethink this action. Abstract Fair Isle motifs are proving to be the It knit of the season, with everyone from Ganni to Zara giving them a go.

As seen at Prada and Chloé, thin ribbed knitwear—specifically cardigans—is back. Instead of wearing them over starched shirts and crossbody nylon bags like you did at school, they now look sleek layered over slip dresses or nonchalantly tucked into jeans.
