Hackney Council offers free insulation to house owners and tenants

Since the
declaration of the climate emergency in the UK on May 1st 2019, a lot of
companies have been striving to contribute. One of them is Hackney Council's
publicly-owned energy services company, that has launched Hackney Light and
Power's Green Homes programme.

The
programme offers free home insulation to every homeowner and renter
irrespective of their income on a first-come, first-serve basis. The funds for
this programme were provided by the Energy Company Obligation and people taking
part in it could save money on their energy bills, while also reducing gas
emissions.

The plan
is also to trial new renewable heating systems, such as hydrogen fuel-cell
boilers and air-to-air heat pumps. These technologies are essential if we want
to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2040, as it was stated in an
emergency motion passed by the council in June 2019.
