Firefighters were at a strip mall where flames were spurting from the ground after a gas line ruptured in Aliso Viejo Tuesday evening.
Crews responded to Pacific Park Drive and Aliso Viejo Parkway by 5:20 p.m., according to a tweet from the Orange County Fire Authority.
The agency said it would let the fire burn until the utility company was able shut off the gas. A Southern California Gas Co. truck arrived at the scene around 6 p.m.
No injuries were immediately reported, and officials said they were working to protect the public from exposure and stop the gas from escaping into the air.
A construction crew working in the area caused the line to break, but it was unknown what led to the fire breaking out, OCFA Capt. Paul Holaday said.
No further details were immediately available.
