I’m Redecorating My House—These Are the Fashion People I’m Stealing Ideas From

There’s no denying that having a house to redecorate is a big privilege. It’s also quite an overwhelming task. For months, I have been saving random images, screenshots and torn out pictures from home design magazines to get a good idea of what I want my house to look like. It’s fun, of course, but it’s also starting to get a bit confusing about what I really want. Happily, it turns out there are plenty of fashion influencers who have recently redecorated or just have impeccable taste when it comes to interiors and who I’m stealing ideas from.

There’s Pandora Sykes whose love of mixing fabrics and bold print wallpaper is a maximalist’s dream. Then there’s Laura Jackson who has the most exceptional eye for detail when it comes to finding just the right vintage piece. I can’t forget to mention Alex Steadman of The Frugality who has documented the renovation of her North London home over the past couple of years, and not only has a hallway I can only dream about, but she also has some great tips. Here you’ll find every home-design rule I’ve learnt from following these influencers (as well as a few others), and which pieces are guaranteed to add a bit of extra oomph to your home…

I’m starting with the hardest first because I think bathrooms can be so difficult to decorate. You want it to be a place of serenity but that doesn’t mean you have to stick to the classic white. Take a tip from Laura Jackson and Pandora Sykes and add in plants, candles and prints to give it more life.

Both Erica Davies and Alex Steadman have the most incredible hallways. Whether that’s opting for dark doors to give the entrance drama or adding tall plants to make it feel taller and more spacious, there are plenty of tips to steal here.

A sumptuous sofa is so important. You’ll be spending so much time on it, after all. Opt for a velvet in a pink or a deep colour to give the area a very homely feel.

Like bathrooms, kitchens and the dining area are in danger of being a little boring. Opt for contrasting colours such as Brittany Bathgate in her green and white kitchen. As for the dining area, try a printed tablecloth and invest in glass wear that feels fun but grownup.

It’s cliché, but it’s true: To make a real difference to the space, you want to invest in soft furnishings. Personally, I’m all about a great rug (see Lucy Williams’s home) or dramatic curtains or a bold-printed cushion.

While this isn’t for everyone, a full-length mirror for those of us who work in fashion is a must. There are plenty around so all you need to decide is which one.
