Mechanical watches is a crazy world with a lot of myths and truths being told. You will actually hear quite everything and its opposite while discussing with other watch geeks and it might be difficult finding the actual truth!

Myth n°1: You shouldn’t wind an automatic watch using the crown.
Truth: It’s perfectly fine to do so, it’s actually the best way of restarting an automatic watch!
Myth n°2: You can’t go swimming with a watch with only 100 meters of water resistance.
Truth: You definitely can. As a matter of fact, one of the most iconic diving watch, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, used to be water resistant to 50 fathoms = 91.44 meters!

Myth n°3: Swiss made watches are the best in the world.
Truth: Japan and Germany also manufacture watches of equivalent quality nowadays, think of Lange&Söhne or Grand Seiko for example.
Myth n°4: In house movements are better.
Truth: This has nothing to do with quality, there are numerous examples of in house calibers that aren’t reliable while movements from ETA or other suppliers have shown reliability over decades.
Myth n°5: Mechanical watches is an expensive hobby.

Myth n°6: Watches are a very poor investment.
Truth: Most watches will see their value instantly drop once purchased, while a few hold up pretty well. Just look at the evolution of the Rolex Submariner for example.

Myth n°8: Sapphire crystals are unbreakable.
Truth: Sapphire crystals are unscratchable.
